Every Sunday morning, in some thousands of churches between Barnstaple and Dayton, a choir of 8 or 10 volunteers stands to sing an anthem that no critic has ever reviewed. The organist who plays it has perhaps 20 minutes of practice a week. The music is by a man whose name is printed on the cover and is otherwise little known. It is by Mr Caleb Simper of Barnstaple, it may be, or Mr J. H. Maunder of London, or Mr Ira B. Wilson of the Lorenz house at Dayton, Ohio.
This record sets down 93 such composers. 30 worked in England, Scotland or Wales, and 63 in the United States or Canada, some of them born in Britain. Most held a church post; some held 3 or 4 in turn. One was a bank clerk, one ran a paper business, one had worked in a coal pit, and one in a brickyard and a pottery. All wrote for singers who read music slowly and for organists who play with care.
The proof that their music crossed the Atlantic is taken first from the United States Catalog of Copyright Entries for 1907 to 1916. Under the copyright law, a London or Glasgow anthem had to be entered at Washington to be protected in America, and the entry names the firm that claimed it. A Boston, New York or Philadelphia firm claiming an English anthem is good evidence of an American edition. Of the 330 works listed here, 214 carry the name of an American or Canadian publisher.
Each composer is marked Documented (55), Probable (27) or Reported (11), according to the printed authority behind the facts given. No title, date or post has been supplied where an authority is silent. Those blanks are listed under Gaps.
English composers ranked by the strongest evidence of North American circulation found in this survey.
Among native North Americans, the largest output by far is that of Ira B. Wilson of the Lorenz Publishing Co., with 462 entries including those under the name Fred B. Holton, and of Charles H. Gabriel (456). Among parish organists writing octavo anthems, William Berwald (54 sacred entries), George B. Nevin (37 sacred; Ditson claimed 29 of his 79 entries), R. M. Stults (32 sacred; Presser claimed 29 of his 67) and Harry Rowe Shelley (25 sacred; Schirmer claimed 17 of his 40) lead.
30 composers working in England, Scotland and Wales whose anthems, services, cantatas and voluntaries were sung by parish and chapel choirs and, in most cases, entered for copyright in the United States. Countries: England 28, Scotland 1, England / Scotland 1.
